At NRS, we publish a range of statistics that are useful for understanding COVID-19. Here is a summary of these statistics and where to find them.

Covid 19 1Deaths involving COVID-19

Every Wednesday, we publish statistics on all deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate. These figures are broken down by age, sex, location of death and geographic area.

Population by age and sex

Each year we publish details of how many people live in each part of Scotland, by age and sex. In Scotland, almost 1 in 7 people are aged 70 or over.

Open data which shows the number and percentage of people aged 70+, and 85+. Also available as maps (under 16, over 70 and over 85).
Interactive charts which let you see the age structure of the population in your neighbourhood (data zones) and council area.

Household structure

People living alone or with children may find self-isolation especially difficult. We publish statistics on the different types of households in Scotland.

About 1 in 5 people live alone. Older people are more likely to live alone – in the 70+ age group, nearly 1 in 2 women live alone, and around 1 in 4 men do.

Nearly a quarter of households contain children under the age of 16.

We held Scotland’s last census in 2011. This was some time ago but it still has information not available anywhere else. It also covers small geographic areas and small population sub-groups.

It has information on:

  • Health
  • Carers
  • Ethnicity
  • Language
  • Occupation/industry
  • Mode of transport to place of work
  • People living in communal establishments such as care homes or prisons
  • Access to a car or van, which can make it easier to get to supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies etc.

    1. National Records of Scotland (NRS) currently cannot break down COVID-19 death statistics by occupation in Scotland due to the low number of deaths within the population of working age.

NRS will continue to review and develop these statistics based on user feedback and as new information becomes available or, in this case, if numbers allow for a robust breakdown. We may provide further analyses in future publications.

      Thanks,

      Ross
